Happy Holidays!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday,  This year has flown by.  I started the year drawing silly little monsters that led to me writing a little children's book that I'm hoping will be published soon.  I thought it would be fitting to do a monster for my holiday card as well.  It's been a busy year work-wise.  Maybe that's why the year feels so short.  I have to remind myself to stop and take those precious moments with family and friends and get out of my little art hole.

I had a somewhat frustrating year art-wise.  After months of monsters and years of my mechanical girls, I found myself just not sure where I was going with my art.  Where I used to get solace in my painting studio, I would sit for hours not sure what to make.  My friends all told me to not worry about it and just create what came out; but I missed the old familiar feelings of joy from painting.  I pushed through.  Took a lot of online classes and then finally I started feeling like I'm again heading in a new direction.  Not sure where it will end up, but I have serenity again in my painting.  I'm currently immersed in new drawings and paintings.  A new series I'm calling my woodland creatures are still evolving. I'm looking forward to a new year of painting and jewelry and family and friends.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.  Let us take a moment to be grateful and remind our loved ones how much they mean to us.

From Light to Dark

Well, been a while since I made a blog entry.  I guess work and shows were keeping me busy, but that's really just an excuse.  I have spent the last few weeks struggling a bit with my art, well with figuring out what art I want to make.  I spent most of the year on the happy monsters and as Halloween approaches, I find myself drawn to darker art, so I have done some inkblot paintings in a new journal that I'm calling 'Out of the Shadows'.  But I can't escape the happiness the monsters bring, so I am doing some of those again too.  My little book, "Spots and What Not's" is off to a publisher for review but the publishing route could be a long and hard path.  So I'm hoping they will pick it up, but I also know that my odds are slim and I'll have to try the others on the list.

Anyways, I am going to load a few new things I've been working on here, but I'm still a bit unsure if any of them is really finished.

Join me tomorrow, Saturday, September 8, in Athens, Alabama for Art and Music.  The show has been moved due to the rain threat, to the Athens State University Carter Gymnasium. Athens Art on the Square

September 8th is almost here, which means it's time for Athens: Art on the Square.  If you have never been, you need to go! It's a great art show around the courthouse in Athens, AL.  I'll not only have my jewelry and paintings that you are used to seeing, but some new things as well, including some monster paintings and some prints.  I'm even bringing a greeting card rack to sell some old and new cards.  There is music, food and tons of art.  Come out and say hello.  If it rains, we'll be in the Athens State College gym.  Look forward to seeing everyone!!

Art Work at Albany Bistro in Decatur

I dropped off some Deadly Sin girls to the coolest little bistro in the area.  Albany Bistro contacted me about hanging some artwork and I took some by Friday.  If you haven't been by there you need to go. The place is charming, the atmosphere is relaxing, the food is wonderful, and now my paintings are there. :)

On another note, I've been getting prints of some of my paintings and journals together to sale.  They are almost ready!  Stayed tuned and keep checking back.

On my children's book , I'm going to submit my first query this weekend.  Probably be my first rejection too, but you have to start somewhere, right.? I know in my heart, that this book will get published, even if I publish it myself.

Exciting News and Gallery Tours

So in addition to being in the middle of my Monster book, and finishing up the pages for that; and researching publishers out there to figure out where to submit, I was asked to put some of my jewelry and paintings at the very cool 16 Main Gallery in Madison, AL.  Miss Apathy is there along with some of her friends and a good assortment of my jewelry and t-shirts.  They also have some wonderful art there from their other artists. I'm even planning some classes there for this coming fall!  Maybe even a kid's monster class!

So Thursday, July 26, 2012 is the 20th Annual Gallery Tour in the Huntsville area.  The local galleries, along with the Huntsville Museum of Art will be open for you to come visit and see the latest art in the area.  My good friend Everett Cox will be doing two bronze pours in his foundry at Lowe Mill.  So come out and check it out.

Leaving this post with a new monster I just finished for my book.

Blogging Again

Feels good to be blogging again.  Been forever since I was able to really get in and talk about what I've been working on.  I started this year taking a few online classes.  One particular on Fairies, but when I tried to sit down and draw fairies, they wouldn't appear. I guess they were being the mischieveous beings they were.  So instead what came out but these silly monsters.  First one, then another, then others.  Filled up that journal with them and decided there must have been a reason to have been overtaken so much by them.  They even invaded my jewelry room.  So that took me off another path to maybe write a children's book.  I sat down with a friend, Brianna Kulpa, who helped me form up that idea. I was off on that path, when I stumbled upon this awesome band, The Wiggly Tendrills.  They wrote me an amazing song, inspired by the draft of my book.  Amazing song that really captured the idea of the book, which is how it's ok to be different.  Take a listen here.  So now I'm drawing out the official illustrations to the book, so that I can submit it to some publishers, which, by the way, I dont know much about.  Anyways, that's the path I'm on now.  I'll continue to share more of the monsters with you as I go.  Thanks for tuning in and welcome back to the blogworld! -Leslie
